For the Revd Mr Noble.
no immediate danger & may be entirely recovered. & therefore
Let him take a dose of the Cephalic Electuary 2 or 3 times a day as his stomach
can bear but continue for a month.
Every night at bedtime two tablespoonfuls of the Cephalic Mixture.
Avoid costiveness & keep his belly regular. Nothing fitter for this than a
tablespoonful of unbruised white mustard every evening or morning but if this
do not answer, take one or 2 of the Laxative Pills.
A perpetual Issue in the crown of his head but if that do not discharge
well or be painfull or troublesome, let it be heated up & a pea Issue be made
one each side of the nape of the neck.
Rub both the arm & leg affected with a flesh brush every night & morning. The
rubbing should be gentle & long continued.
Diet should be of a middle kind. Some meat at dinner every day but
b moderately & fill up the meal with plain soup & bread, pudding, & such
vegetables as do not prove windy. No meat at supper but some kind
of grain with or without milk at pleasure. No Indian tea at breakfast but
may take rosemary or balm tea, & bread & butter as usual.
For ordinary drink water or small beer as agreable. At dinner
every day he may take a glass or 2 of cherry diluted with water, but must be
very moderate & avoid Spirits in every shape
Exercise in a carriage might be of service, but will hurt him
more than cold & must be cautious of going abroad at this season. Even
at home should be well cloathed & a flannel shirt next his skin. Avoid
a very warm chamber, sitting over the fire or too many bed cloaths.
Take 2 ounces of ground Wild Valerian root, 2 drachms of Russian Castor, an ounce each of powdered Peruvian Bark and Orange Peel Conserve, and enough Clove Syrup to make an Electuary. Label: Cephalic Electuary bigness of a nutmeg 2 or 3 times a day washing it down with a cup of Valerian tea.
Take 4 ounces of Rosewater, half an ounce each of Peppermint Water and Cinnamon Spirit Water, 2 drachms each of Compound Spirits of Lavender and Compound Tincture of Castor, 10 grains of Hartshorn Salts, and an ounce of Simple Syrup. Mix. Label: Cephalic Mixture. 2 tablespoonfuls every night at bedtime
Take a drachm of Aloetic Pills from the latest edition of the Edinburgh Pharmacopœia, 12 grains of Calomel, and enough Gum Arabic paste to make a mass to be divided into 15 pills. Label: Laxative Pills one or two for a dose at bedtime when occasion requires
