Mrs Montgomery
Mrs Ms. symptoms have in so many instances mended
during the summer, that by the precaution of avoiding
the winter it is to be hoped she may get the better of
her ailments altogether – And as she is to be attended by
a skilful person, it is not necessary for me to give any par¬
ticular directions, but I shall offer a few.
She should now quit this country as soon as possible
making easy journies towards the south. It is of conse–
quence for her to get there as soon as she conveniently
can, but so much haste as give her fatigue may
be the greatest interuption she can meet with ––
Let her journies therefore be always within what
her strength easily bears, and when she makes two
stages a day it should be always with some rest
between & particularly by lying down upon
a bed for some time –
Cold is carefully to be shunned, therefore a light
close chaise & well covered up in it – She should
avoid being out after sunset & take what pains she
can to have her lodgings at night warm & dy dry
when she gets into good lodgings, she should rest for
a day or two now & then, especially, if the weather
is wet & cold. –
The lighter & cooler her diet the better for her – When
she is upon the road, she may h it may have a little
[Page 2]
meat at Dinner and a little wine & water after it. But
when she has got to the South of France, I wish she
could give up both meat & wine & live very entirely
on milk grain & fruit.
Costiveness to be avoided – the pill already ordered will
probably answer the purpose – if not Dr Cairnie will find
another cooling Laxative, or recourse must be had to injections
It will be necessary especially on the journey for Mrs.
M.y. to continue her dose of L.L. at night, & it well
be safe to dose as long as she continues to take
precautions against costiveness by the means mentioned –
If at any time the pain of her side becomes trouble¬
some, the most certain relief will be got by a blister
but I will not advise it to be kept open as a fresh
blister will always do give more relief ––––
If at any time the her breathing should become
uneasy it is hoped the pills ordered below will give
relief ––––
Take a drachm each of coarse Balsam of Sulphur and ground Elecampane root, 2 drachms of Liquorice extract and enough hot water to make soften the extract, and having added the rest, make into a mass to be divided into pills of 5 grains each. Label: Pectoral Pills ther three to be taken every night & morning.
