I wrote you a report
of Mr. Bethunes Case from Largo this Morning
which I refer to got particulars preceding
yesterday morning the 19th.- I gave Mr. Bethune
a pritty large dose of the Electuary yesterday
morning, I left him about ten, The Electuary
did not begin to operate till about one
and only produced three Scanty motions, thro
the remaining part of the day did not find
himself so well therefore took no other Medicine
and very little food and only two glasses of
Wine after dinner, I said he had err'd in taking
so little wine as he had been strictly enjoind
to the Contrary said he could not take it-
Pass'd a worse night than he has done for three
or four past- Frequent returns of Difficult
[Page 2]
breathing which prevented him from Sleep
Breathing been free and easy since Thursday
last till last night- The continuance of this
favourable Symptome was omitted in this
Mornings report- I arrived at Kilconquhar House
betweext 12 & one oClock this day & found that
Mr. Bethune had repeated the Electuary this
morning as he thought the dose yesterday
had not done so well, it has operated four
times copiously, passd a good deal of Urine
last night, complains a little of dryness in
his mouth this ↑day↑ Swelling of the Limbs the
same but that on the thighs more increased
which he seems anxious about- From the
operation of the Electuary and taking little
support this and yesterday His Spirits are
a good deal flaggd- I ordered immediately a Cup
[Page 3]
of Gelly with a Glass of Sherry which was not
taken with much relish. Have desired the
Nitre to be repeated in the afternoon & the Squills
& nitre in the Evening- At which time I expect
to be with Mr. Bethune again
I am with perfect regard
