Case of Mrs Leith


Mrs Leith aged 26 -- of a healthy constitution
[florid?] Complexion & remarkably active -- the
Mother of four Children & formerly recovered
from inlying very sick -- The Third time She lay in
She recovered as usual for some weeks, after
which she contracted a great degree of nervous
debility
, became very costive, lost her Appetite
& flesh -- She used different medicines occasionally
to remove the Costiveness & sometimes these had
too powerful effects & griped her much -- During
the last pregnancy she was rather better but
when it was far advanced she was siezed twice
with fainting fits, attended once with a difficulty
of moving her jaw or using the organs of
Speech
for a short time -- These did not return -
She went to her full time & had a natural
labour
without fainting, altho the former

time before the placenta came off She had a
very alarming faint of long duration - She re¬
covered very well for three weeks, after which
her weakness returned with its usual attendent
costiveness &c & the fluor albus to a considerable
degree -- The Oleum Ricini has been ordered for her
of which she has taken but one Spoonfull & it
proved too strong for her, operating four times
with gripes - The Peruvian bark always disa¬
greed with her Stomach & increased the Costive¬
ness
