[ID:317] From: Dr William Cullen (Professor Cullen) / To: Mr John Seed / Regarding: Mr John Seed (Patient) / 8? July 1775 / (Outgoing)
Reply to Mr Seed concerning his own case. He should continue to take the pills, although only if they continue to be effective; he should avoid cold bathing if the 'eruption' is severe, but should embrace it otherwise as 'one of the best means of strengthening your nerves'.

Dear Sir
From your letter of the 5th Current recieved yesterday, I
conclude that your Ailments are much abated both in violence and
frequency; and I hope they will at length go of entirely and leave you
at liberty to go wherever your affairs may call you. I hope that the
fourth Course of pills which you have now entered upon will do this
for you, but if they should fail in an entire Cure I cannot advise
you to enter upon another Course in less than a month after this
is finished as a frequent repetition makes them lose their power.
When this Course is finished I would have you try Cold bathing
but dare not advise positively as I do not exactly remember
the state of the eruptions you mention in your postscript --
If they are unsteady & liable to go out and in it may be dan¬
gerous for you to try Cold bathing, but if the eruption is such
as keeps very constantly out you may try the Cold bathing as
[Page 2]
one of the best means of strenthening your nerves. It will render
the trial very safe if you bring on the application of Cold by degrees
and you may do this by beginning first to wash your body all over
with tempered water. To six quarts of spring water immediately
taken from a spring or well, put two quarts of boiling water, and
with this tempered water you may have your body washed all
over employing a large spunge and beginning with your head and
shoulders while you sit or stand in a tub fit to recieve the water as
it runs down. This you are to do every morning soon after
coming out of bed, but every second day you are to keep back half
a pint of the boiling water till at length you use the water quite
Cold, and then you may either continue to wash or dip your whole
body at once in water as you please. This I am certain will be of service
to your nerves, but if you have any doubt from the state of your
eruptions, please write me the exact state of that matter and I shall
advise more positively - With regard to your going to Barbadoes
I should wish you was entirely free from your Ailment before you went
there but I am not so clear about the consequences of your going, but
that if business is pressing tho' you should not be absolutely free from
your complaint I should allow you to make the trial, as changes of
Climate have very surprising effects in your Disease. - With respect to
your Diet I am very clear that the low diet is the safest and I think it
should be easier for you to continue it now than it was for the first
month you was put upon it, and you will find that after tasting ani¬
mal food again you will not easily keep within bounds. As your
Disease therefore seems take near to a crisis at present I cannot advise
any change of Diet. For your Drink I can advise no other than water
as all fermented liquors or Spiritous are likely to do harm. I have only
to add, that when you please to write me again, you may do it without
renewing a fee.
