For Mr Robert Bailie

Mr Bailie must consider that his health has been
disordered for a twelve month past and tho he is
seemingly well now he can not be so certain of
its being established but that it will be proper
to bestow sometime upon a Regimen that may
render it still more secure.

He should go to the Country and remain there
for five or six weeks employing all the time
in the following Regimen.

1. Every morning betwixt Six & Seven oClock he
should begin to drink some warm new drawen
Cow Milk Whey choosing the milk of a Cow lately
calved. He may begin with taking only half a
mutchkin / but every two days he may
increase his dose half a mutchkin till he
has brought it to a Chopin: Whatever quantity
he takes he should divide it into several draughts
leaving half an hour between each. He may take
the first draught abed but should get up
& dress before he takes the 2nd & between the

[Page 2]

several after draughts he should walk about within
doors or without according to the weather. When he
has finished the whole of the whey he should then
when the weather is favourable walk out
for an hour before he takes breakfast.

If the whey proves troublesome by raising wind
in his
stomach or Bowels let him take a Tea
spoonfull of the sugar of Aneese in the first & if
necessary also in the second draught of the whey

It is supposed that the whey will keep his belly
regular but if it purges him he must take less of it,
{illeg} and if it does it in any quantity
he must abstain from it altogether.

If on the Contrary the whey does not keep his
belly regular and he becomes Costive it will be
proper for him to take once or twice a week a
gentle laxative [s?]ome flowers of Sulphur a Dram
or two of Sal Polychrest or if these do not answer
an Andersons Pill. Either of the two first may
be taken in the Morning with his Whey
the last will be best taken at Night

2d For Breakfast he may take Tea and (↑with↑)
Bread & Butter but let the Tea be taken
weak with a good deal of milk taken
Cool and no more of it than is necessary to
put over his Bread and Butter

3d Every day after breakfast that the
weather is tollerable he should get on
Horseback and ride gently from two to
four hours. He is not to be prevented
by the threatning of a Shower but he should
always take effectual precautions against

[Page 3]

being wet.

4 - At Dinner he may take a bit of any
plain meat and I have but this general
direction to give that he should take care
both with respect to the quality and quantity
of his food always to keep his Stomach [light?]
he may eat a bit of meat every day but should
never make a full meal of any kind but
make it up with Pudding Greens or Roots

What Fish he takes should be of the
lightest kinds - Salt meat he must
avoid Spiceries & Pickles he should
take very sparingly.

For ordinary Drink Toast and water is the
best Malt Liquors of all kinds and even
wine will hardly agree with his Whey
and milk he may take a Glass or
two of Red Port with Water at Dinner
but his safest Drink will be a weak
Punch without souring and of this he
may take two or three Glasses every day
but should take great Care not to be in the
least danger of being heated with it

5 - After Dinner he should sit at home for
an hour or more but when the weather
is very good he may walk out either
before Tea or after but making always
sure of being at home even in the best
weather sometime before Sunset

6. Let his supper be always of Milk

[Page 4]

with Bread Rice Barley or what else of that
kind he likes best and if he abstains at the
same time from all kind of Strong Drink it will
be the better.

7. To finish the Directions of the day I have only
to add that he should go early to bed. For his
getting up in the morning I have taken care about

8. I am of opinion that if this Regimen is properly
observed he will need no medecines along with it
but if he finds after trying it for some days ↑that↑ the
whey does not digest easily it may be
proper for him to take a vomit and if at any
time he should be threatned with Chilliness or
other symptoms of ague he should then [certainly?]
take a Vomit and follow it with Bark as
Circumstances may seem to require but ex¬
cept in such circumstances I think it may
be best to abstain from the Bark altogether
