Concerning


Jno. Cooke Esqr. ↑Aged 60↑ of a sound Constitution
Plethorick habit in the Month of June 1778 found
the first simptoms of what he Fears to be a
stone in the Bladder - He has since that period
Often passed Quantities of Blood & often
finds a Difficulty & pain in making water
These Pain of Making (↑Return↑) with Great Violence at Intervals
at which times his inclination to make
water is very frequent
(perhaps every Three or
four Minutes) & whenever such Inclination
Arises he is also troubled with a Tenesmus & in
making water finds a scalding in his urethra or
as he expreses it his water seems preternaturaly
hot
. He in the Latter end of July last had a
Mighty severe attack of his complaint which
lasted for about a week he was at that time
ordered ↑the use of↑ Caustick Alkali & Laudanum by a prac¬
titioner in his own Neighborhood who said he
suspected a stone in the ureter used the Caustic
Alkali
for about 3 Weeks but was by some friend
advised to Discontinue it During a Return of
his complaint in attempting to make water he
is all at once seized with a Pain which discends
to the Soles of his feet & also attacks his left side

(immediately under the Twelfth Ribs which surrounds
the small of his back he also has at present a
great heat in his skin accompanied with a
great thirst On Tripping in walking or on
Making an ungaurded step he finds a pain
in his groin & of Late thinks he sometimes
feels a pricking in his bladder as if from a Rough
stone
he observes that he finds great ease from
keeping his body open & that if ↑he↑ at any time
happens to become somewhat costive he is apt to
have a Returning of his complaint He being a
Man very extensively engaged in business
was Consequently Much exposed to Sever Riding
& sometimes accustomed himself to Make Water
on horseback – he of a long time has been
Troubled with a burning heat in his soles
he has never been sounded for a stone
[he] has never Received any benefit from
all the Medicines Which he has Repeatedly
used he Never Remembers to have Voided
any Slimey or Gravely Matter
