Sir

This will be delivered to you by Dr.
Touch. --

I beg leave to trouble you for your
opinion of the following Patient's case, who has for
sometimes past been under my care. --

He is about 70 years of age, & has had a very
strong constitution, & hardly ever ailed, till about
five years ago, he began to pass some Stones by
the
Urethra, & has ever since had more or less of
Calculous Symptoms. --

His present Disorder according to his own Account
came on as follows. --

About the first of November --83, after sowing
some wheat with Lime on a cold windy day, &
some of the particles of the Lime getting into
his Throat, he was seized with an excessive &
severe thirst
, which has continued unquenchable
ever since. ---

He will drink ↑of cold water↑ at the rate of several ↑Scottish↑ pints
↑[uduy?]↑ both day & night. --

[Page 2]

When the Disease commenced he only was obliged
to make his water frequently
, but in no extraordi¬
nary quantity, till about the beginning of
June last, when he began to complain of a
small Swelling in the lower part of his belly, but
no uncommon hardness or Fluctuation to be felt,
his penis ↑was↑ swelled a little for a few days, & these
Complaints were succeeded by an involuntary
Discharge
of urine when asleep, but not at any
other time, & this Symptom continued with him at
[prest?].

He has little Appetite, but eats tolerably with
a view "as he imagines" to strengthen him". He has
no extraordinary quickness of pulse nor any symp¬
tom of Fever excepting the Thirst. He sleeps tolerably well.
He says he has a rotten taste in his mouth, but
this is worst in the morning, he complains also
of a constant burning dryness all along the
mouth & Throat.

His Belly is irregular, he will be two & ↑even↑ three
days without a Stool.

He thinks the quantity of water he makes is nearly
equal to what he drinks. ----

[Page 3]

The first Physician who attended him at the
commencement of the Disorder ordered him vomits
with the
Bark & Port wine, a little afterwards
I being called recommended Cream of Tartar
with acids, an opening Diet & gentle exercise,
He continued some weeks with taking Cream of Tartar
at the rate of half an ounce per day, but all with no good
Effect. Another Physician was consulted who ordered
Tamarinds & the same other things I had tried
to be continued, & added that if these things did not
do, he suspected Dropsy or diseased Viscera would
be the Consequence. ---

None of us seemed to be well enough ac¬
quainted with the nature of the Complaints, & the
Authors we consulted gave us only a transient hint
to try the remedies we recommended. ---

As his present Disease seemed to threaten Diabetes I
recommended Serum Aluminosum with Laxatives
at proper intervalls to prevent its increasing the costive¬
ness
, but no kind of effect in abating the Symptoms
has been yet produced. ---

I hope you'll take the trouble of considering
the above Symptoms as soon as convenient, &
send your Letter to Dr. Touch's care addressed
to me Surgeon in K{illeg} In the mean time

[Page 4]

I have the honour to be with great respect &
esteem

Sir
Your most obedient & most humble Servant

Chas. Watson

P:S: I had a vial
of his urine just now
& seems to have no
peculiar taste, no sweetness
that can be {illeg}, is of a greenish
yellow colour.
