Colll. Clerk's 1st. Letter, mentions as follows

I have again taken to a little wine I have begun
with Burgundy these five days past from
half to a pint after Dinner, taking exercise
different ways I believe I take too much in
this course. I have been also taking a little
infusion of Bark in cold water with a little
tincture of it & a little Elixir Vitriol –– Bathing
but once a week –– Yet these five days past
I have been seized with such excessive weakness
I can't express or explain to you fully –– sometimes
with prodigious cravings for want, the wine
don't encrease my strength the feebleness has been
so great
& is, that soon after dinner I am totally
debilitated
oppressed & not able to sit up altho'
I am carried to the open air –– I am Languid a stupor
and sleepiness that I am obliged to go to bed an
hour sooner than usual but don't sleep, I had
been trying drinking Cheltenham water (purgative)
but it wou'd not go doun with me (I mean pass)
I mixed it with salts one Morning which hurt
me much made me cold feverish and worked me
greatly –– three days after I took Rhuburb
finding my stomach not right which gave me
two motions –– it is from that time my excessive
weakness
has been –– last Tuesday the 20th. I have
taken nothing but the Bark since nor have I
had any passage in
my Belly –– resolved to give
up as much as possible all Laxatives but the
Castor oil
as directed by Dr. Cullen who I believe
must be troubled with me again I am very
uneasy today –– but shall Bath I fear it relaxes
I mean to try a shorter time in ––––
