Sir,

I wrote you in the begining of Summer, but as I received
no Answer I conclude my Letter mislaid, or miscarried- You desired, in
your last, Mr Ballentine might write, when any Thing new occurred-
Mr. Ballentine does not attend me, nor any other of the Faculty, much
more, than accidentally, when I apply for the Medicines prescribed, conse¬
quently, I chuse not to trouble him.-

Notwithstanding followinging the Rules I personally received
from you in August -80- I have had frequent Attacks of the Bleeding
since- The Quantity of Blood discharged by Stool, I think, diminishes
every Time, yet still they reduce me- And the Pain after them, on
the Right Side
, is more Violent- which I judge to be Flatulence in
Consequence of some Obstruction produced by that in the right, as it
always yields to any Medicine that overcomes that inveterate
Costiveness I am liable too
- Indeed the greatest Part of the
Pain I feel arises from this- and it is often so obstinate
that I have taken 3 or 4 Drachms of Soluble Tartar without

[Page 2]

Effect- and 3 or 4 Papers of the other- but all insufficient to
produce a Motion- My Appetite is sometimes bad- sometimes
tolerable, tho' the Stomach of late has frequently rejected Food-
By a Letter from Dr. Borradaile (who as a Friend has paid particular
Attention to the Symptoms of my Disorder for about two Months
past) you will receive more Information perhaps than I am
able to give- Indeed I am convinced, from the well directed
plan of Regimen and Physic, (tho they have not effected a Cure)
that you perfectly understood the Nature of my Complaint-
I have received frequent Relief- but as I have always had
relapses- I am led to think the Medicines were too weak-
I once or twice for a few Weeks got my Body into a solube
state by eating ripe Fruit this Summer- which brought
on Discharges of Blood
- but unusually without Pain on Pain on the
right Side
- preceeding which I felt a great Heat and Palpi¬
tation
in the Part on the left ↑left↑ Side I always complain of
accompanied with much Anxiety and Restlessness-

as a Preventative, when a Bleeding is threatened, or whether

would be possible to draw of that constant Heat or Inflammation
externally, on which, I imagine, depends the Cure? I ought to
have observed- I always have cold Sweats especially in the Hands
and Feet
previous to these Bleedings, and after them.-

The Costiveness is more obstinate after every Discharge- and
