Mr. Chamier wrote to you on the 26th. Ultimo
at which time, we thought he showed some signs of
recovery & continued to do so will the 28th., when he was
seized with a violent pain in his Bowells, as it is not
in my power to give you an intelligent account of his
situation & treatment to this, I have desired the
apothecary to do it, which you will see below - finding
himself much better & being desirous to be ↑at↑ home, we came to
this place today being 16 Miles, rough road, which he has
born without much fatigue & hopes to be in London on
Thursday - I thought it necessary to send you this account
as Mr. Chamier had requested your advice for his future
conduct I have the honour to be

On Thursday the 28 th. he was much affected with
pain in his bowels seemingly spasmodic
pain - his ↑bowels↑ are distensed that evening a little ↑without wind↑ the
next morning very much - he had a clyster
↑on thursday night↑ made of chamomile tea & Salt which brought away
some lumps of ↑black↑ indurated stool -- he has another clyster
the same evening which produced no effect -- On friday
morning Dr Darwin of Litchfield saw him, & ordered
a bolus of calomel | viz |
Take six grains of Calomel, fifteen grains of Rhubarb, three drops of Animal Oil and a sufficient quantity of ginger and make a bolus
-- the bolus had
no effect, on friday evening he took some infus tenue
& Salts, also without effect on saturday morning
he had another clyster which brought away a pretty
large quantity of very black & very hard foe stool
after this stool his bowels were some little less distended

About two hours after this stool he vomits of a large
quantity of bl mixid matter, I Apprehended the food
& medicines he had taken -- He was rather
better after this operation -- On sunday morning
he had caught two more clysters which seem'd
to relieve him a good deal - a pretty large
quantity of the same colour'd & ↑very↑ hard stool was
evacuated, his bowels much less distressed & soft -
Dr Darwin ordered Mr Chamier to live well, to
take brandy & water, wine & water &c - he also
ordered draughts of decoct. of cælumbo root &
the tinct: aromat: to be taken twice a day -
In {illeg} he was to take a powder composed of
steel filings - magnes alb. & rhu: - also
20 or 30 drops of ol Anis: ess. two or three times
a day, & a bolus at night of
