Mr Watt aged about 39 years was in the Month
of March 1779 seized with a pain in his Right
side
pretty violent for which he let no blood till
about 3 or 4 weeks after, towards the end of april
1779, when it became so violent that he [durst scare?]
draw in his breath -- he was immediately relieved on
being bled, but was exceedingly weakened and was
not able to walk 100 [yards?] for more than
a month after during which his flesh wasted
much -- he had then a Cough Mornings and
Evenings -- Indeed for more than a year
before he had coughed a good deal every
Morning after he rose from bed -- The Cough
continued all last Summer but not at all
violent and during that period he felt a
pain as if about the Diaphragm of his
Right side which was only felt however when
he coughed, yawned or sighed & took in a long
breath --- In September the pain seized him
in his left side not however to such a violent
degree as it had done before in the Right side
but as it was attended with feverish --
complaints
, he was bled again very moderately
he was again weakned much, lost appetite
and flesh wasted -- his appetite gradually
recovered -- he took some Exercise on horse back
and three or four times used a little of
Decoction of Radix Seneka --- he had used a very few
Squill pills both on this & the first attack
but found them oppress his Stomach and
quickly gave them up, notwithstanding of
which he expectorated easily mornings & evening
without any severe degree of coughing.

His Complaints were pretty easy during
winter during which he neither seemed to gain
nor lose flesh -- he constantly remained weak
however and could not walk much, but
took a ride on horse back when the weather
permitted. For more than two months past
he has had a tumour on each side over the
middle of the [spare?] Ribbs larger than a pigeons
Egg which at first he thought a thickening of
his Ribbs, for some months previous to which
the flesh above the Ribbs all about there
part was very sore {illeg} when Touched.

The Tumours are now quite moveable without

[Page 2]

any signs of their quickly coming to Super[ation]
he continues to cough and expectorate every
Morning and afternoon towards evening
which goes off after getting up some
viscid phlegm -- appetite pretty good -- Belly
regular -- Pulse generally 100d. Complains
of weakness and wasting of the flesh and
Dyspnœa on taking the smallest Exercise.

He has kept an issue running in his
left side since September last and which
till within this fortnight was as broad as
the palm of his hand and discharged very
copiously a thick whitish matter
, this
now curtailed to the Size of a Crown piece
and still discharged plentifully.

He attributes the first pain in his
Right side to writing severall hours
one evening in a Room without fire
after coming out of a Brewhouse which
was full of warm steam.

For 14 or 15 years before he
had been exceedingly troubled with
wind on his Stomach during the {illeg}
last 5 or 6 years of which he grew
rather inclined to Corpulencey during
which his Windy Complaint was not
in any degree abated.
