Case of A.B.
January 1780. ✍

[Page 2]
A B, Aged 69, of the sanquine Temperament most exquisitely Marked.
January 12, 1780.

Enjoy'd the most desirable state of health till 68
years of age, & for 4 years after had only frequent attacks of Py¬
rosis
, which gave no uneasiness but during the Paroxysms.
For this he us'd some bitters in vain, yet being neglected
it at last spontaneously disappear'd. At intervals since he
has had slight attacks of Diarrhœa, and a few of the least
distressing symptoms of Dyspepsy which never commanded
any attention till within these twelve months past
since which period the Diarrhœa return'd so frequently, &
so violent with sometimes a slight bloody tinge, that his
corpulency which then was very considerable & his strength
& appearance far superior to his years, seemd evidently much
exhausted, & his dyspepsy was pretty fully mark'd; however
his sanguine disposition & a long experience of the spon¬
taneous exit of similar attacks of Diarrhœa never suf¬
ferd him to apply remedies different from well chosen
diet till after a severe attack of somewhat ting'd diar¬
rhœa
the beginning of August, by which he was much
emaciated. This was readily stop'd then and on frequent re¬
turns therafter, by an infusion of Terr. Japon: with a little
Laudanum, which was never push'd the length. of co¬
tiveness
. After obviating the dyspepsy by diet & Lime
water
, & the diarrhœa occasionally by the Japonic infusion
at the beginning of November he began to small
quantities of bark, yet had a slight attack of diar¬
rhœa
about the 9th of that month, which being easily
stopd by the infusion, & afterwards obviated by
large quantities of bark periodically repeated,
has never since recur'd. At present he is free
of Acidity of (↑at↑) stomach the sympathetic headache it usually
occasiond, & as he says the flatulence, yet he
has a pain of the left side which, very tolerable
in any other position, won't suffer him to lie
on it. His emaciation continues rapidly encreasing
& his appetite which was bad is not mending.
He sleeps pretty well. His Belly is generally natural
but sometimes he has a loose stool in the morning
His Pulse is scarcely different from the natural
state, & his heat & respiration are ↑quite↑ natural. His urine
is very high colord & deposits no sediment on
standing: for some time past has slight partial
sweats
about his breast in the morning: & at
intervals his legs become somewhat less
sensible than natural. Knows no cause
for his complaints: got a fall from his
horse last February which left a Rheumatic
- like affection of his shoulder for many
months.
