[ID:1794] Case Note / Regarding: Mrs Marion Cathcart (Buchan) (of Genoch and Knockdolian; Mrs Ross ) (Patient) / February? 1778? / (Incoming)
Unsigned case note in the hand of John Buchan, WS, concerning his sister, Marion, wife of Robert Cathcart of Genoch, compiled from information sent by letter. She has borne several children, and now suffers back pain, numbness and disturbed sleep. The external annotation mistakenly names her as 'Mrs. Ross': in Doc 1491, Buchan refers to Cullen having made an error with her name.

A Lady who has had several children, has for some
years past been very subject to nervous complaints, not constantly
but at different periods, wakefulness in the nights accompanied
with startings & palpitations, have been the consequence of the
distemper - Her last child is about 4 years of age - during
the pregnancy she had no symptoms of it but enjoyd good
health, tho naturally of a feeble & delicate constitution
- She has seldom been subject to it above a week at a time
and months have frequently interveend between, in which she has
had very tollerable health - Last summer when upon
a visit she took a violent pain in her back, and had a
return in harvest, on her return home, which prevented her
from taking exercise for a great while - Yet she slept
well - The Pain in her back is now better - In the Harvest
she had a numbness in her Legs & hands & when she went to bed
was seized with a tremor & startling, which continued for some
hours, and prevented her from sleeping - Lately having occasion
to change her bed frequently - The wakefullness has returnd with the
other circumstances - a good sleep however generally restores her
to health, and her stomach is pretty equal, but Except when
her rest is disturbed - sometimes she has recourse to Laudanum
of which she has taken 20 drops or 50 of Anodyne Tincture. These ↓however↓
[Page 2]
are never used but when absolutely necessary - a Glass of
Port wine taken when she lys down sometimes has had a
good effect
The Letter from which these particulars are collected further
mentions That the Pain in her back has returnd within these
few days which is imputed to an accidental cold, but is going
off - The surgeon applyd two plaisters without any good effect
- The Pain has alarmd the Lady
