Borness 20th October 1779 -
Sir


Our old patient Mr Chas. Addison has been for
these 8 or 10 days past troubled with a Giddiness in the head
at times without any other complaint /I mean feverish
or Gouty/ excepting flatulencys which has been very Uneasy
during all that time but when it is expell'd either Upwards
or downwards he finds releif. He has no Nauseousness or
squimishness
at any time & free from pains, a good Appetite
& digests Well, his pulse betwixt 70 & 80. Urine healthy, and
sufficiently easy in the belly, when he lyes in bed the Vertigo goes
quite off tho' he has not taken to the bed Untill this Afternoon
when he found the complaint worse, being in the Country he
sent for me this Evening, but by the time I gott to him found
him pretty Well, however As I think his complaint proceeds
chiefly from the stomach I propose taking with me to Morrow
Morning a Gentle Vomit & if I find it necessary shall give
it him –– He begs I would enquire off you if you think an
Issue in
his Arm would be of any service to him he has a
natural tendency to fatness, which I must the favour you'll
Advise me in course how I am treat his present complaints
in case they return or grow worse & About his Issue ––

he desired I would inform you that there is some
ships here belonging to the place that will for Holland,
by first convoy, but will not stop in Leith roads if
they can help it –– therefore if Agreeable to you may
send out the things you wrote him About by the Carrier
on Saturday & they shall be carefully Attended too and
forewarded
