at the Desire of Mr Kennedy of Pinmore
I beg leave to Inform you, of the Case of his youngest
Son. He is now Near 2 years of Age, and Although he is
grown up to the Size of a child of that Term of Age yet
to the Great Concern of his Parents he is Very Deficient--
in the Exercise of Both Mental & Bodily Powers.
Soon after he was Born his head was Discovered to be
by much too Closs Scarse the Vestige of a Bregma to be
felt tho at the Same time there was no Visible over lapping
of the Bones so as to disfigure the Shape of the Head--
He soon got a Nurse and we hoped that when his vessels
were properly Distended by keeping his head warm and---
loosely [Roll'd?] and endeavouring to Make him Cry might
might Restore the Situation of the Head to what it aught
to be but to our great Dissapointment no such Effect
Succeedid and the ill Effects of that Compression on---
the Brain- Soon became Visible-- - the Head rather-
Small in proportion to his Size but firmly Ossified before
he was Six Weeks Old but it was observed he could---
Not carry the Head at the Age that Other Infants do' and
there was a Manifest Degree of Palsy took place not only
in the Muscles of the Neck but the Hands & Lower Extremi¬
ties - the Vital Organs Seemed to be Injured from the Same
cause his Stools were Seldom and with diffculty Voided--
his Eyes Seem to have Sufferd from the same cause tho, he
sees and will turn his face to the light yet he does not Seem
[Page 2]
to fix them properly on Objects and Could never be---
never be Diverted with play things - whether this Arises
from a Defect of Sight or Mental Powers I have not
been Able to Determine-
He Hears very Well seems much Delighted with Soft Musick
he is however Sensible in Some Respects knows those
that are about him and- is feard- and- Shy to Strangers
when he was about 4 Months Old he got the Chincough
we were in Some hopes that it might have Opend the--
Sutures a little as he was then so young but nothing
of that kind took place on the Cantrary it Seem'd to
have encreased the paralitic tendency particularly
a Weakness of the Whole Spine and for Some time-
he grew very Slowly
Some warming Stimulants were tried to the Neck &
Spine-- but with Very little Apparent Effect and last
Summer with Sea Bathing he did not at the time seem
to Keap any Advantage from it but since he left it
has Grown Remarkably faster than before- and- his
Head- which before did not Seem to Advance on
Growth with the Body has since grown very sensibly
Bigger --- now Sir if from the above Information-
there to any particular treatment that Ought to be tried
Perhaps Electricity which Could not be Conveniently had
here his Parents are Willing to Send him to Edinburgh where you
Could better Judge by seeing the Child and- Order the--
treatment under Your Own Eye--
I am with Regard
Sir
Your most humble
and Most obedient Servant

It may be proper to Mention, that the Child was most wretchedly Nursed -- The Woman had been with
Child, without discovering it, for the four last Months he Sucked, and ↑he↑ would take no Other nourishment than
her Milk while She was with him --His Stomach now is good, his Lungs Strong --He is much Affected-
with Sounds - And has a Surprizing Acuteness of Taste - Nothing so much pleases him as Rich high
Seasoned Soups - One thing Seems particular in his Situation, he Sleeps very little, much less
than Children ordinarily Do, which Appears the Reverse of what might be Expected --
