For Miss G. H.

Having attentively considered the whole history
and circumstances of Miss H' case I find no difficulty
in judging of the nature of the disorder and judge it to
be entirely of the hysteric kind. Such disorders are of very
↑various↑ appearance but at bottom are all of the same nature. They
are often tedious and difficult to cure but I hope that by
attention and pains for some time Miss H. may be entirely
recovered, and for that purpose would propose the follow¬
ing measures.

Let her take one of ↑the↑ Tonic pills every night at bedtime -
and again, in the morning before breakfast. If these pills
particularly the one in the morning make her a little
sick and squeamish the dose is enough and may be conti¬
nued at the same rate for a fortnight. But if the single
pill does not make her sick she must take two for a
dose and even three or four till the dose is found that

[Page 2]

will make her a little sick and at that dose she is to
continue for a fortnight at one ↑time↑ unless it falls into the time
of a monthly period which however may and should be
avoided.

2. After the tonic pills have been taken for a fortnight -
they are to be laid aside & in place of them let her take
every night at bedtime a dose of the Antispasmodic pills.
The dose of these at first may be two pills but if the stomach
bears them will the dose may be increased to three or five
and they are also to be continued for a fortnight at one
time and they may be taken even during the monthly -
period unless thes discharge happens to be more than usual
in which case it will be better to let these pills alone.

3. If it shall happen that these pills do not prevent -
some return of the disorder A second course of both is
to be taken first of the tonic and after of the Antispas¬
modic
, and at the same time I would wish to have a re¬
port of their effects.

[Page 3]

4. During the use of these medicines it is proper that the
belly be kept open and therefore if any costiveness comes on it is
to be removed by taking from half a dram to a dram of the
compound powder of Jalap in a little Syrup in the morning.
If this shall be necessary at the time she is taking the tonic
pills
, the morning dose is to be omitted on the days she is to
take the laxative.

5. During the use of these medicines the diet should be very
light and cooling chiefly of milk, grain & vegetables with
very little animal food and that of the lightest kinds. All
salted meats and particularly cheese is very improper.
Her ordinary drink may be small beer, whey, buttermilk
or plain water but all kind of strong drink whether
wine, malt liquor or spirit are extremely improper

6. All kinds of exercise in cool weather will be usefull and
unless it is in very warm weather much walking is par¬
ticularly proper.
