Holm 17th. July 1776

Sir

I have the Pleasure to inform you that
my Brother is rather better within these Eight or Ten
days, than what he has been for some time past --

The flying Pains which he complained
of in his Body, and particularly in the lower Extre¬
mitys
are Entirely gone ---

In the Evening he has a little Stiffness
and Swelling about his Ancles which I imagin
proceeds more from weakness than any other thing.

Which Swelling intirely disappears in the Morning
The Pains of his Head and Neck which were formerly
fixed to the hind part of his Head & upper part of
his Neck
are now shifting about every two or three
hours to different parts of his Head. ---

The Pain & Inflammation of his Eyes is a little
abated, but still continues severe upon him. -

He is at present interily free from Fever, and
seems to think himself rather stronger than he
was some days ago. ----

[Page 2]

The weather being so Damp & uncertain has prevented
him using so much Exercise as I could have wished
but the little he has been able to take has agreed
with him. ----

He finds that the Lightest animal Food is apt
to increase the Pains of his head & Eyes.

He has made use of the Laud: Liquid: twice. It
gave him a better rest, but was obliged to desist
from it, as he found it made him Hot, Restless
and Rather feverish next day, and encreased the Pains
of his head. --

The Castor oil, has found answer the Purpose
Exceedingly well & takes it every 2d. or 3d. days to the
Quantity of half a Table Spoonfull, which procures
him a Copious Stool. ---

The Infusion with the Spirit Tincture of the
Bark
he took for some time, but two or three
days ago past has found the Bark in substance

[Page 3]

agree very well with him, and takes it to the Quantity
of two Drams a Day, washing it down with a little
Claret & water: -----

He continues Bathing his Eyes 3 or 4 times
a day with the Collyrium you ordered for him. --

I am
Sir
your obedient Humble Servant
Saml Spalding
