Captain Campbell, having about four years ago, undergone
a Course, for some venereal Complaints, was perfecty cured
of them all, but some scabie Eruptions upon the scrotum,
which continued pretty constant, for upwards of twelve months,
only, that by applying some Mercurial ointment, it would
soon heal in one part, but seen after appear in another
Plasy - And was frequently subject to wandering Pains
through his limbs & arms.
About two years ago, having been free from these Complaints
for some time, he married, But his Complaints soon after
returned, and have troubled him, by turns, more or less ever
since, But being attended with no bad consequences with res¬
spect to Mrs Campbell [He?] apprehended they could not be of
a venereal nature. The misfortune, of loosing her in Child¬
bed about ten months after Marriage threw him into the
Deepest Distress, and induced a most violent Headach,
which was in some measure Periodical, being always
worst at Night, for some Months, during which time, he
complained also of a most intollerable thirst, so as to
Drink to four or five {illeg} pints of water in the 24 hours,
which was greatly mitigated, by using some acid spirit of vitriol
and the headach was in part removed by a Course of the
Bark - But soon after, his other pains were greatly increa¬
sed, for which he used some Camphorated oil, which, together
with wearing flannels, & the use of a flesh Brush, gave
some relief, but of short duration. for no [sooner?] one part
was relieved than another was affected. It fixed for some
time in the skin Bone, where it produced a swelling in every
respect similar to a venereal node. And from this circum¬
stance from the pains being worst in the night while
[Page 2]
in Bed, from the Eruption &c I apprehend those complaints
must proceed from a venereal Cause. and proposed to
put him under a Mercurial Course. But being obliged
to be upon constant Duty for some time, could not be
confined the requested time - And being ordered to
use the Cold Bath, found so much relief from it, and
the flesh Brush, as made his Complaints more bear¬
able, and he was hopeful, that, by persevering for some
time, in this course, he might accomplish a Cure by
milder, and more convenient means, than mine.
However, of late, though he still uses those means, the
pains have rather increased, one of his arms is con¬
siderably swelled, the Node is not gone / though much
less than it was once / two spots of a dryscaly Eruption
have appeared above the knee. all which confirms
me very much in my former opinion, though it is not
easie, I [own?], to conceive, how such complaints should ly so
long dormant in the habit, be so little communicable
and be so much relieved, by the Bath & Brush,
not with standing, I should have more confidence in a
Course of Solution, sarsaparilla & mezereon
[Page 3]
Dear Captain
According to Desire, I have on the two preceeding
Pages, made out a state of your Case, which have adressed
to no particular Person, not knewing to whom you
mean to apply - have also ventured to give my own opi¬
nion, with respect to the nature and cure of your Complaints
But as I hope you will apply to some Person of more
extensive Practice & skill, than I can lay claim to, I [put?]
due Deference, submit mine to theirs, and wishing you
a happy and speedy Cure
