I hoped to have had the Pleasure of seeing Doctor
Cullen before this time, but a variety of Causes has
so far prevented my intended Journey, & my Father
has found it possible to defer his, till it be conve¬
nient for us to visit Edinburgh together which
we still intend, as soon as some Company which
are staying at our House leave Newcastle --

As that may yet be a Month, I thought it necessary
to acquaint Doctor Cullen, also that I had tried the
Medicine he prescribed twice, which had made me
violently sick ↑& acted↑ as an Emetic for two Hours, & therefore
& therefore I refrained from taking it -- I am
still in the Country, & daily use the Cold Bath, &
as the Weather is grown cooler generally ride once
& sometimes twice a day on Horseback. I live
principally on Milk & Grain, a little Pudding
or Vegetables to my dinner, & take no Wine --
I have frequently been, & more lately since the
Weather grew cooler, cold & chill after bathing,
particularly if I was prevented using Exercise,
& even then this Coldness will sometimes return --

[Page 2]

I have often thought whether it would not be as
well sometimes to intermit Bathing a Morning &
whether it would not be better altogether laid aside
in Winter, as I much more readily catch Cold
while I have this Chillness upon me, than when
warm with Exercise, & tho: I have found Cold Bathing
of great Use, when these Heats were so violent &
constant on my Skin, yet it now seems to repel that
kindly Warmth which is so comfortable to a Person
generally used to Extremes -- Doctor Cullen can better
judge of this, acquainted with the human Frame
& I submit it to his Decision -- I still am extreme¬
ly susceptible of either Heat or Cold, & have lately
caught some slight Colds, that have affected me
with Head Achs, Oppression of Spirits & Heat, but
they went of without Sweating, leaving upon me
however a dread of the ensuing Winters Cold, which
I much fear will be extremely hurtful to me, &
without I can use frequent Exercise in the Air through
Winter, I may justly expect a much worse one

[Page 3]

than last, as I had no Sinking Oppression or Coldness
in the beginning of it, & slept well whether I used
Exercise or not -- I at present sleep very badly at
times & have frequent violent Head Achs - The
inclosed I desire Doctor Cullens Acceptance of, as
a Tribute of that respectful Gratitude which I
shall ever retain for his obliging Advice --
Before we set out, I intend to drop Doctor C-
a line for fear he should be from home as that
would disappoint the Intention of our Journey,
& remain with Respect
