For Mrs Oswald

Her complaints considerable, and are commonly obstinate
but hers have been so to a great degree, but it is
still to be hoped that a Medicine may be found for them

Take two ounces of Sarsaparilla and cook first in four pounds, then in three pounds of water, and add Mezereon root bark and boil until condensed to two pounds. Then add an ounce of Liquorice, two drachms of grated Sassafras. Stir everything and label it: Daiphtic Decoction a pint or more to be taken in divided Doses every day.

Let care be taken that the Mezereon prescribed be good qua¬
lity that it be the Bark of the Root only, without any part
of the Wood that can be avoided, and that the Bark be
sufficiently acrid & not spoiled by long keeping ----

She is to beg in with drinking a Pint English in the
24 hours - If her Stomach bears it easily she would
endeavour to increase her Dose gradually so as to take
a bottle or two Pints of it in the 24 hours ---

If she takes this medicine while at Bath, she may
wash down each Dose with a small glassful of
Bath Water - but during the Time she takes this -
Medicine I would not wish her to take any large
quantity of the Bath Water ---

The Decoction should be continued for two or three
weeks and if it continues to agree with her Stomach
and to have that effect upon the Skin which I expect
it may be continued till it shall have perfected a Cure
but the use of it may now and then be interrupted for
several days. --

[Page 2]

During the whole time that the Decoction is used, a tepid
Bath should be employed every third or fourth day and during
the whole time care should be taken to avoid cold -- During
the use of the Decoction, Mrs Oswald may continue to take at
least every night a Dose of the Antimonial Medicine, she has
been taking for some time past.

At all times, Mrs Oswald should take care to keep her
belly regular either by Hiera picra or Magnesia as the state
of her Stomach shall direct

During the use of the Decoction Mrs O. is to use the same
Diet which has been formerly advised -----
