Dr N. Doubleday concerning Robert Matheson ✍a Palsy

Your Patients disorder must I think depend
on some congestion in the Vessels of the Brain and therefore
your Bleeding blistering & seton were very proper. But
as the congestion is not yet removed I think more bleeding
might be necessary & I propose the application of six or
eight Leeches
to one of his Temples, I think it probable
that you have observed one side of his body or of his
mouth
affected more than the other and I should therefore
apply the Leeches to the Temple opposite to that side on
which you discern any tendency to Palsy. If the Leeches
bleed freely & in any degree obviate his Delirium
in a day or two more they will be properly repeated
& if his pulse tho' very slow be remarkably full or
that the Man who has any fullness of habit it is possible
that even some more blood taken from his Arm or
Neck may be proper & useful. As I have the congestion
in the Vessels of the head chiefly in View I think
you have done well in keeping the Belly open with
the Tinctura sacra but as that medicine does

[Page 2]

seldom more than keep the Belly open I should wish
to purge him a little more & for that purpose if you do
not disapprove I should propose the Pulvis e Jalappa
compositus
of our Last Dispensatory that is the Jalop
well bicturated with Cream of Tartar. These are the
remedies I can especially suggest but at the same time
think it may be extremely proper to continue both
the Volatile Tincture of guaiac and the Pills you have
prescribed.
