Letter from James McNab, in Waterford, concerning Mr Nicolson of Glenbervie, who consulted Cullen 'about the 22d. of July last, about a complaint in his side & shoulder which was brought on by a severe Rheumatic attack', and has been living in the area since August. He now complains of a dimness in the eye of the side affected. McNab has treated him with electricity, but believes that the patient did not give it a fair trial and should have persevered with it.28 January 1786

Letter [marked 'copy'] concerning Henry Ivie Nicolson, probably from his mother-in-law Lady Nicolson (see Cullen's reply). The unnamed recipient is probably James McNab. She writes, 'Tell Mr. Greig from me, I wish him to call on Dr. Cullen', and asks that Greig reply to her directly with Cullen's advice: presumably Greig delivered this letter to Cullen. The patient's 'Side and Eye is as bad as possible', and he thinks that 'he will soon be quite blind'. She wishes to know whether cold bathing or taking the waters are advisable for him, but 'The Doctors at Waterford say he will be well by the End of Summer'.June 1786

[DOC ID:5290]
Reply for 'Nicolson of Glenbervie, probably to James McNab, and apparently in response to Lady Nicolson's letter, which seems to have been delivered by a Mr Greig. He is advised to have a 'bathing machine' *shower-bath), fitted up in his Irish home, in imitation of those in use in Scotland. The day of writing is unclear, but inferred from position in casebook. Presumably this letter was to be taken back to Ireland by Mr Greig.27? June 1786
