Letter from William Russell, of Newbottle, Co. Durham, concerning the case of his 9-year-old daughter, Margaret, who suffers from tumours on her face, side and axilla, some of which have ulcerated and are discharging. Consists of a covering letter and more detailed case note, unsigned, but in the handwriting of the physician Cuthbert Eden, which describes her condition and treatment. It is to be delivered by hand by a Miss (Ann) Wilson.22 July 1787

Reply, for 'Miss Russel'. This letter concerns the case of Miss Russel. Cullen has received her father's letter and the case note via Ann Wilson. While the case has the appearance of scrophula, he does not think it is so. He recommends continuing sea bathing, and prescribes an aperient and ointment for the sores.27 July 1787

Letter from Paul Kearsley, apothecary, on the case of Miss Margaret Russell, enclosed by her father in letter 3227. She is continuing the sea bathing, but though the tumours are growing less, her axillary gland is still healing.24 September 1787

She is taking the (aperient) solution prescribed and her sores are being bathed and dressed. Although they are not healing, the sea bathing is improving her general health. he notes a 'scorbutic'-type scurf around her eyelids and lips.24 September 1787

Letter from William Russell on the case of his little daughter Margaret, who is following Cullen's directions and still sea-bathing. However, the ulcers on her cheek and side are still discharging. He encloses reports by her local medical practitioners (letters 3228 and 3229). He refers also to Ann Wilson's role in conveying communications.25 September 1787

Reply, for 'Miss Russel'. This letter is addressed to William Russell, concerning the case of his daughter, Miss Russell, in response to 'yours of the 25th currt.' Undated, but the date is given by Russell in his reply, (see letter 3269. Based on Mr Kearsley's account, Cullen advises reducing the use of the aperient, and believes it may be possible to bandage compresses to the sores on the side and axilla.30 September 1787

This letter is addressed to William Russell, concerning the case of his daughter, Miss Russell: 'though I must say that your own accounts are not quite so favourable as those of Mr. Kearsley, but I hope the measures he proposes will soon finish the entire cure of all the sores'. Cullen proposes the use of the bark.30 November 1787
