Letter from Dr Thomas Wells, who was a student of Cullen's in 1769-70, consulting Cullen on the advice of Dr Warren of Taunton, concerning his own case of gout: 'I have for near a year almost entirely lost the Use of my Legs and have not been able to walk a hundred yards without much Pain'. He is not yet 33, but 'my Life's a Burthen'. There are traces of a handstamp, but it is illegible. Some pen-testing ('Sir' repeated several times) -on the exterior not transcribed. 27 December 1779

Reply headed 'Doctor T. Wells at Dittisham near Dartmouth Devon',. Cullen advises him: 'Your Case cannot be managed, but by a full and general instruction upon the subject of the Gout, & that may be found pretty fully in my first Lines, & I presume confidently that you and Doctor Warren are able to supply all the Commentary necessary'. He gives dietary and exercise advice, and says that travel to Southern Europe may be more use than travel within Britain. 22 January 1780

Letter from Cullen's former student, Dr Thomas Wells, concerning his own case and its progress 'since I was favor'd with your Letter about four years ago'. The milk diet Cullen advised upsets his digestion. He is still suffering from spasms in his feet before he goes to sleep, 'as if I had receiv'd a violent Blow from a large Club', and breast, giving him a feeling of 'a stricture & Sensation as if the Sternum was compress'd to the Vertebræ'. He passes on compliments from Dr Warren.9 August 1785
