[DOC ID:2802] |
Letter from Janet Macduff to her brother, Alexander Macduff, relating the news of their young niece Augusta's death. The letter was first sent to Peter Duff in Perth and then William MacDonald in Edinburgh because Janet does not know where to reach her brother. Since the letter was passed on and later correspondence confirms Alexander was in Edinburgh, Perth is not marked as destination of this letter. | 27 April 1786

Letter from Janet MacDuff to her brother, Alexander MacDuff. She writes concerning her state of mind; that Jackey had a letter from Miss Annie Bannerman; that Miss Hunter is still staying with them; that the current price of a horse is monstrous; and that Mr Barty was chosen as a member of the Assembly. She laments of the lack of entertaining books in Mr B's library, as his collection is mostly for his own use. | 16 May 1786
[DOC ID:2954] |
Letter from Alexander MacDuff, concerning the case of his sister, Janet MacDuff, who, he claims, has been deprived of the use of her reason. MacDuff mentions that Mr Wood has also written to Cullen about the case. He also notes that he had visted Cullen's home that afternoon. The date of this letter is inferred from letter 2937 which discusses Alexander MacDuff's forthcoming visit to Cullen. | November? 1786?
[DOC ID:2937] |
Letter from Colin Baxter to Alexander MacDuff, concerning the case of Janet Macduff, Baxter's sister-law and MacDuff's sister. The first two pages, also written by Baxter, contain a report of Janet MacDuff's condition to be passed on to Cullen. Baxter asks MacDuff to get advice from Cullen in writing, as he does not trust Dr W(ood) to faithfully follow Cullen's prescriptions in the depth of Winter. The annotated date added on final page (6 Nov 1786) seems to be incorrect as Baxter dates his letter 29 Nov 1786. | 29 November 1786
[DOC ID:2948] |
Letter from Robert Wood concerning the case of Janet McDuff. He writes that Miss McDuff's previous anxiety has been worsened by the death of her niece and led to 'insanity' which leaves her in danger of self harm. Wood includes a report of the treatments the patient has undergone and notes she currently lives in 'a very retired country place, attended by two Maids, and is I believe fully better and more tenderly cared for, than she would be in any place of confinement'. | 24 December 1786
[DOC ID:5376] |
Reply 'For Miss McDuff'. Cullen believes Janet MacDuff's case to be entirely 'from an affection of the mind' and therefore curable. He suggests that she be kept somewhere away from new things and that she should have a keeper. He recommends corporal punishment only in extreme circumstances. | 28 December 1786
