Glasgow graduate (1769), later DD (1792), ordained to Leith Chapel of Ease in 1775; Minister of New Church, Dumfries, 1780-94, and of St Michael's from 1794, succeeding Dr Mutter. He m. 1778 Ann Hutton, daughter of James Hutton, merchant of Leith, and had a large family. See Fasti Ecclesiae Scoticanae Vol. 2, pp. 266-67.
