Longstanding patient. The son of David Bethune (d. 1731) and Anne Paterson. Born in Cupar. Brother of Alice, maternal uncle of John Lindsay, who took the Bethune name as his heir, of Henry Lindsay and of Peter/Patrick Lindsay (all of whom are present in this database). Won Silver Arrow in archery competition at St Andrews University, 1722: medal survives in university collection. Married Anne Bethune, heiress of Balfour in 1731; she died in 1785. John Goodsir describes him as 'of a full habit, short neck & rather a large head'. |
