Dear Sir

I have considered the Case of Miss Renny
with great attention & am sorry to say that I have
considered many others of the same kind & find them
very diffocult to Cure but if no Schirrosity is yet formed
in any of the Viscera I do not despair of being of
Service & I find no Symptoms except the length of time
& some obstinacy to Remedies that should make us
despair of Miss Renny. You are certainly right
to take the present occasion to favour as far
as you can the Menstrual discharge & if you
Succeed it will certainly be of Service but tho you
do gain that point I am afraid the disorder of the
Stomach may still continue & therefore you my advice
on that Supposition ––––

I am well persuaded that the frequent & long
continued use of bitters does harm & I therefore advise
Miss Renny to abstain from them. The Chalybeats
I have a better opinion of but she will not bear them
Cold & if you of trying them farther I prefer the Pyrmont
I would add to it as much boiling water as will make it
milk warm & in this way taken immediately before &
after dinner I found of of great Service in such weak
Stomachs. If you use the Pyrmont you must take
care when you open a bottle to decant it into Small
bottles to be closely corked for the most part ↑of↑ People
take it in a State when it is good for nothing. I expect
that Miss Renny may be particularly relieved by the
Seltzer Water as a mild alkaline I would recommend them

[Page 2]

to what length her Stomach easily bears taking
them in about a gill at Several different times in a
day. But they will also be better for being a little
warmed by an additon of boiling water. The do better
also for having a little warm milk added to them
& the milk will digest along with the waters when it
will not without. You say nothing of her being costive
but it is commonly the Case & to be regularly obviated
I have no objection to it is being done by Elix. Sacrum
but I would prefer doing it by Magnes alba ––––

In short it is by Chalybeat & Alkaline Remedies
that I expect benefit but not without riding on Horseback
or in a machine which is the best strengthener of the
Stomach. I am sorry you have said nothing of the
trials already made in this way when the Sickness comes on
after dinner I have found a teaspoonfull of Sal Volatile
of service & sometimes an Opiate usefull as there is some
advantage of breaking the Habit of Vomiting
