Dear Dr

Inclosed is Mr. Spalding's Case since
last; I suspect from his great weakness
and the Disease hanging so long about
him, that he is in great hazard.

Whatever Medecines you may think
proper to order, I beg the Prescription
may be in such time as that it
may be got ready.

A different hand from that which
sends the Case has made these Words in a
letter to me by the same post "You
cannot Conceive how weak pained spirit¬
less & discouraged
he is, I am firmly
perswaded that Dr. Cullen knows not how
far he is reduced I saw his Prescription
this Moment. He talks of Air Exercise
&ca. – Impossible attempts in his present Situation
but I will not distress you with my fears
& forebodings." The above is from
a Clergyman of Sense & Spirit by no
means apt to be apprehensive

Mr Spalding Gordons Case continued

Since the last of the 26th. Mr. Spaldings pulse from 64 to
92 mostly low and depressed
, the pain of the head a little
abated, the stiffness and pain in the neck much the
same. On the 29th. The Inflamation of his Eyes
became worse and continued to increase till the 2d.
of July at which time it ran pretty high, continued
very costive having voided nothing but indurated
fæces. On said 2d. of July gave him a doze of the Castor
oil
as directed which gave two stools by day and two
by night, said Evening applied five leaches to the
outer angles of the Eyes which took Effect and
in a few hours gave the most sensible Relief and
abatement of the inflamation, but being quite
restless in the Course of the night
the inflamation
is again somewhat increased today, his spirits very
low
, his pulse at 80 in the morning, now 84, his
urine still deposites a large quantity of sediment as
Before. The soap Lineament has been used as

ordered, has yet given very little Relief. These some
days past have given from 25 to 50 of the drops of
the cordial Tincture of Castor occasionally and Today
added five drops of liquid Laudanum, he complaining
of uneasiness on his Bowels. He is much de¬
bilitate
, takes little food and sleeps little.

N. B. His skin throughout the whole week has
been cool and temperate. The Collirium last
ordered is expended and none of the surgeons in
this neighbourhood can supply it therefore that
or whatever else may be ordered might be sent
out by post. – The Blister in his head has still been
kept open.
