Your friend & old patient Alexander Spalding Gordon Esquire from the
fatigue of travelling & a cold he caught on coming into the Country on
account of his father's death on the 24 of March last, was seised
with slight Rheumatic complaints in his head, & flying pains in the
extremities, for which, being free from Fever, he used moderate Exercise
in the Open air by Riding walking &c. with a light slender diet.
But catching more cold on the 20th of April he was seised with an
encreas'd pain in his head, with Tension of the muscles of the Neck,
for which there was a Blister applied between his shoulders, and his
Feet and Legs bath'd each Evening. - On the 23. was seised with a
smart Fever pains encreas'd, for which he was twice blooded to the
quantity of sixteen Ounces, the blood very Sizy; the Blister
repeated, which carried off the Fever & moderated the pains. - On the
29th. was obliged to ride to Kirkcudbright about twenty six miles,
and return'd on the 1st. of may; But having got a fresh Cold, his
pains return'd with encreas'd violence, & continued much the
same till the 10th. at which time he was seised with an acute
fever
, pain in his Head encreas'd, with a fix'd pain in his left
side
, and higher part of the Thigh, her pulse was from 86 to 98.
He was again blooded to the quantity of Ten Ounces, very Sizy;
another Blister applied betwixt the shoulders & the parts affected
Embrocated with the volatile Linament; On the 13th. Fever abated;
On the 15th. free from Fever, at which time he was put under an
alternative course of the Vinum Antimoniall, beginning with 15 Gutta
to 30, which course has been continued till the 5th. of June; Only
intermitting a day Occasionally when the sweating had been very
profuse. - From the 26 of May, pain of the side & Thigh became
moderate, & has not been troublesome since, – But on the 6th. of
June the pain of his Head became very intense, particularly in
the fore part & temples, which much affected his Eyes, & which
had not been the case before; He was again blistered on the neck,
& one applied behind each Ear, has been blooded with Leeches, two
or one, & one on the other Temple, has taken the solution of Tarter
Emetic
to the quantity of a grain each night, these two nights past

His drink tho' the whole has been green whey, water gruel, & Tea;
His food Chicken Broth, Barley gruel with Raisins & Currants, toasted
Bread & Paneda; Cream of Tartar whey, & Lenative Electuary he has
taken Occasionally to keep his Body open, he being naturally Costive
