Letter from Rev. Mr. [Matthew] Surtees of University College, Oxford, concerning his nervous disorder. He is prone to agitation and facial flushing. He hopes to visit Newcastle next summer, and from thence visit Cullen. His brother (John) had been successfully treated by Cullen for his asthmatic disorder, and has recently written to him from Nice. 9 December 1789

Reply by Henry Cullen titled 'Rev Mr Surtees'. The patient's ailment seems 'entirely constitutional', so may be impossible to remove entirely. He gives dietary and exercise advice, and instructions for bathing using the shower bath (not a numbered regimen, however), with a prescription. Henry explains that his father received 'yours of the 9th Decr', but that 'at the time he was extremely indisposed, and his ailment has gained so much ground upon him as to render him at present incapable of attending to business of any kind'. Henry's remark, 'Could I have conversed with my Father on the subject' may imply that Cullen can no longer speak. 11 January 1790

[DOC ID:3623]  Linked to other Cases
Letter from M. Surtees, to Henry Cullen, concerning his own case. He mentions Henry's father's indisposition but 'the advice which you give me appears to me...very judicious and therefore probably such as your father, if his health had permitted, would have given me'. He mentions also having received another letter from his brother John in Nice. Addressed to Dr Cullen junior. Dated 18th January 1789 but this is clearly meant for 1790 (or using old dating system that began the year in March). 18 January 1790
