Reply concerning the case of Rev Macfarlane. Cullen states that it was very proper to judge his complaints as 'of a Phthisical nature' and recommends a journey to Bristol. A postscript mentions that 'If Mr Macfarlane has no other funds than his stipend it was not necessary for him to send me any money'. 4 January 1783

Reply concerning the case of the Revd. Mr. McFarlane, whose complaints Cullen regards as 'a mixture of Rheumatic affection and of indigestion'. Ivie Campbell has been involved in treating him. Cullen offers dietary advice, recommends the wearing of flannel, and encloses prescriptions, which are in Cullen's own hand. 16 October 1784

Letter from Hugh Marshall, visiting Edinburgh, concerning Reverend Robert McFarlane of Kilfinan, who had 'complain'd thro the whole winter of a pain in the small of his back, but [in February] it had grown greatly worse'. It is in the region of the left kidney, and spasms of pain extend to the testicle and thigh, with pain on urinating. He cannot turn himself in bed. Marshall describes some of the medicines used.20 June 1785
