Notes
His elder brother George was personal aide de camp to Prince Charles during the '45 and accompanied him in his exile. James also left Scotland at this time and apparently joined the Persian army in 1746, so started his military career. After Persia he joined the Austrian Army taking part in the Prussian war and was instrumental in securing the Austrian victory at the battle of Kunersdorf, in 1759. He remained in service of the Austrian army until 1761, but remained in service to the Empress Maria Theresa and was ennobled by her in 1782 as Count Lockhart-Wischeart of the Holy Roman Empire. Under her successor, Emperor Joseph II, he became a Knight of the Order of Maria Theresa and a Gentleman of the Bedchamber to the Emperor. The Emperor was godfather to Lockhart’s son. |
