Born in Dirleton, East Lothian, he obtained service in the East India Company, and was a Lieutenant in the Bengal Army when his case notes came to Cullen. He retired from service in 1808 after rising to the rank of Major. During his period of service he developed an interest in Persian and Arabic literature and his collection of Oriental manuscripts was donated to the British Museum. He had married Elizabeth Paterson (d.c. 1827) to whom he had three sons, and all were to follow in their father's footsteps to India. |
