Notes

Margaret was the daughter of Patrick Hamilton of Kilbrachmont. She married John Dempster of Dunnichen in Dundee, 13 November 1740. She was his second wife. She was widowed in 1754, when her husband was killed falling from his horse. Margaret was stepmother of Margaret Dempster and George Dempster, and mother to Stewart Dempster and Agnes Dempster. She asked Dr Alexander Douglas to write to Cullen about Anny's case in letter 1240. Evans's biography of George Dempster, 'The Gentleman Usher' (2005) mistakenly assumes that Stewart was her name from a previous marriage rather than one of her first names.
