Dr Johnson, the most celebrated literary figure of the eighteenth century, has been the subject of many biographies since Boswell's famous Life appeared in 1791. As recorded by Boswell, Johnson had dined with William Cullen in Edinburgh on the evening of 16 August, 1773.
