Of 28th Regiment of Foot. Retired 11 Dec. 1775. Inspector of Military Roads in Scotland. He d. 11 May 1788. Younger brother of Generals Robert and Philip Skene of Hallyards, Fife. Via his mother, Jean Douglas of Strathendry (d. 1783), a cousin of the Douglases of Strathendry and of Adam Smith (qqv). He m. Elizabeth Morrison, and had at least 2 children, David and Katherine (d. before 1803). His son David (1783-1803) inherited Hallyards and Pitlour from his uncle, his father having narrowly predeceased his older brothers. However, his death, unmarried, in Paris, meant the inheritance case was taken to the Lords in 1825 as Moncreiff v Skene.
