Husband of Anne Bisset. Born in Glenalbert, Perthshire. After studying medicine in Edinburgh, Bisset was appointed as second surgeon of the military hospital in Jamaica in 1740. He remained in military service, taking part in the War of the Austrian Succession and other campaigns, before returning to medicine in 1751, practicing in the village of Skelton in Yorkshire. He gained his MD from University of St Andrews in 1765. Bisset wrote a number of books on military, political and medical subjects. His own heavily annotated copy of Cullen’s ‘First Lines of Practice of Physic’, can be found in the library of the London Medical Society. |
