I received your letter for which I return you my
thanks. Since writing you last, I was seized on
the Tuesday thereafter with a shivering & cold,
and soon after I went to bed that night, I
suffered for three or four hours the most excru¬
ci↑a↑ting torments (in the swelld testicle) that a
human creature could bear. In the morning
Mr Wood bled me in the arm, & afterwards ap¬
plied for a considerable time warm fomentations
to the part. This rendered the pain somewhat
tolerable. Next day he applied leeches to it. But
of all he had, only three & those very small
ones, would fix. Since that time I have felt
very little pain. The testicle now begins to
abate a little in the swelling, & not to feel so
hard as formerly. I apply constantly from
time to time ↑to it↑ a bit of rag dipt in a wash he
gives me; which is all I have done for some
days past. After the cold fits went off, I was
seized with hot fits, & the most ↑prodigious↑ sweatings for
several days I ever experienced. These are
beginning now to abate. I was obliged to use
a laxative at first, but I do now pretty well
without it. - Would you be so kind as favour
me with another letter to let me know how I
am going on, & whether there be any other
thing you would have me do. Would you think it
[Page 2]
proper to apply leeches again as so very few took
effect the former time? Will it be long before
the swelling go off? & will it be attended with
any bad consequences? ---
Dear Sir
your very faithfull
& obedient humble servant
