The Consultation Letters of Dr William Cullen (1710-1790) at the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh
[ID:5737] From: Dr William Cullen (Professor Cullen) / To: Dr / Regarding: Mrs Mary Geils (Pascal) (Geil; of Geilstoun) (Patient) / 16 October 1788 / (Outgoing)
Reply [to unnamed practitioner concerning the case of Mrs Geils, of Greenock, who suffers from nervous, stomach and rheumatic complaints. Cullen ascribes them to her being a native of the East Indies, and therefore not adjusted to the cold and damp of the West of Scotland. He provides strengthening prescriptions and offers general dietary advice, adding: 'I forgot to say above that the most part of East Indians use high seasonings too largely. I would not bid Mrs. Geils to quit her habits entirely, but must say that very much of these high seasonings hurt the tone of the stomach very much'.
