Neil Malcolm Esqr
I had the honour of yours of the 12th. past
a fortnight ago but as Mr. Farquhar was then in
the North of Scotland and expected here very soon
after I delayed answering your letter till I
should have a conversation with him who is So
well acquainted with your Sons case. He has
at length been here and we have had a full con¬
versation on the Subject. The result of it is
this, that considering every circumstance we
hope it will not be necessary for your Son
to go to a Southern Climate for the Winter
Season and that it will be enough for him
to remain where he may have the conveni¬
ency of Sea bathing either on the Northern
coast of France, or on the Southern coast of
England, and except it may be for the
[Page 2]
consideration of Language, Company or other circum¬
stances in which Physic is not concerned you
may take either Side of the Channel that is
most agreeable to you and your Son. For the
particular place on either Side we are not suffi¬
ciently acquainted with the variety of places
which the French Coast affords to say that
any other place is better than that of Boulogne,
and on the English coast we do not think
there is any place better than Brighthelmstone
which your Son has been formerly so well
acquainted with. We are also clearly of opinion
that the Sea bathing should be continued during
the Winter, but not with such frequency
as might expose him to the very bad weather
that may sometimes occur and I am of
opinion that avoid he might be secure against
accidents of that kind by his having at
[Page 3]
hand such a Shower bath as we now use in this
Country with great conveniency and advantage.
I believe Mr. Farquhar can easily provide
the Apparatus at London but if he should
find any difficulty in that I can give you the
necessary directions, or send you a Model of
it from Scotland. Wishing your Son perfect
health and you all happiness I am
respectfully
Dear Sir
Your most Obedient humble Servant
