For Mr. Mackenzie

From the accounts I have now had I can judge
more clearly of the nature of his complaints and am
sorry to observe that they are of a very bad kind.
With a general disposition to Dropsy there seems
to be particularly water collected in his Chest. This
possibility is owing to his not having had the Gout
but that consideration is now out of the question
and the only measures ↑now↑ to be pursued are those
for drawing the water out of the Chest and the
rest of his body. For this purpose Diuretics
and Purgatives are to be employed and with re¬
spect to the choice of these I have given my
opinion fully enough in my former letter and
let that be attended to and executed as well as
his patients circumstances will admitt. I can
see no room for any bleeding. Blistering can now

[Page 2]

have little effect on drowing off the water but it is the
only remedy that can relieve the Stitch that he
has lately been affected with. Till the medicines
employed shall relieve the principal disease an
interim relief is certainly to be sought for by Opiates
and I can see no reason to doubt of theyr agreeing with
him and if he takes purgatives they will on that
account be both more necessary and more safe.
