For Mr Campbell of Dalnish.

His ailments entirely in his Spirits & tho this cannot be
without bodily complaint yet this is of no consequence
& maybe soon removed.

1. Daily exercise to be his chief object. In tolerable
weather he should be out every day in a carriage but better
on horse back & should not be afraid even of a little bad
weather. His journey home should be two stages a day
setting out early so as to finish the two before dinner
which may be a little later than usual. Both on the jour¬
ney & afterwards he should take as much of his daily exer¬
cise on horseback as the weather & his strength &c.

2. Avoid cold; be well cloathed & wear a flannel shirt
next his skin; but he should never be so heavily cloathed
when abroad as to be easily heated in exercise & at
home he should avoid warm chambers; & stifling airs.

[Page 2]

3. Diet very much as at present. For breakfast Cocoa tea
with a good deal of milk; moderately of butter to his dry toast.
He may take likewise with his bread, currant jelly or honey
but moderately of the latter.

At dinner, solid meat but in moderate quantity & should
make up the meal with broth pudding or vegetables of
the least windy kinds.

Light suppers, as of oatmeal or barley gruel, or panada
& with these if he like a spoonful of brandy.

Plain or toast water for ordinary drink, but after din¬
ner he may have two or three glasses of Porter Sherry
which will be safer diluted with water. After dinner he
may also take about a gill of good Porter, but in this
omit one of his glasses of wine.

4. Little occasion for medicine. No heating ones can
be proper for him. For his night fits of depression
he may use his Drops he does at present & for which I
have prescribed below; but he ought to use them as
seldom as possible. The only medicine I can recommend
for constant use is the cooling laxative prescribed below. It
will keep his belly regular, but if in spite of it he become
costive he may take a Laxative pill prescribed below.

5th. Avoid close business or absolute vacancy of it:
Avoid being alone; & frequently admit easy company.

Take one ounce of Elixir proprietas vitriolicum and two drachms of Spirit of hartshorn. Mix. Label: Stomachic drops. Fifty on a bit of sugar & washed down with a glass of water.

Take two ounces of soluble Tartar, one ounce of Glauber's Salt, half an ounce of polycrest Salts, two drachms of spanish Sea-salt and ten ounces of spring Water. Dissolve and strain. Label: Cooling Laxative Solution. Two table spoonfuls to be taken in half a muchkin of whey every morning before breakfast.

Take one drachm of Aloetick pills mass. Divide it into twelve pills. Label: Laxative pills, one or two for a dose at bedtime when occasion requires.
