The Reverend Mr Gillies, Kirkwall

Nervous Symptom originally weak has recieved some shocks
and your complaint is entirely from disordered Nerves
affecting both mind and body. No danger to be feared
nor madness nor apoplexy. Continue your walking
as much as business and weather allows of - and if
the Country you are in could admit of Riding I would
recommend it. Seek Company and Amusement.
take a few Glasses of Wine, but never approach
to the least intoxication. - Avoid frequent com¬
munication with your Wife as I suspect too
early Venery has been a cheif cause of your complaints
Cold bathing you say does not agree with you &
at this occasion not to be tried but in a way not
convenient for you; but in Summer I think you
may try it -- your Diet, of Middle kind --
much Animal food would load your Stomach &
much Vegetables would disorder it. Milk
very proper for a great part of your Diet if
you digest it well - Drink Water alone
Avoiding all Malt Liquors. The only Medicine I
can advise is the following

Take an ounce each of Tincture of Mars and Aromatics. Take [31.33?] in a small measure of Water twice or thrice a day. Strengthening Drops. To be continued only for two or three weeks and after some intermission return to them again and so on
