For Henry Lochead Esqr.

A spare Diet – nothing heavy or heating –– and very sparing
in strong drink of all kinds –– I hope there is no occasion for
renouncing entirely Venereal Pleasure, but be very cautious ––
Exercise and fresh air very necessary. A Carriage best. Riding
to be used with great caution – Costiveness to be avoided by Diet or
Flowers of Sulphur Cream of Tartar or Castor Oil, but purging is as bad as
Costiveness – If you should have returns of your ailments, let not
slight alarms make you use the Bougie
- As slight ailments may
go away with low living, watery drinks or by adding an Ounce of Gum Arabic
to the bottle of water – I have no opinion of Nitre in such cases &c.
It may be sometimes difficult to pass the Bougie; but dont be alarmed
& have recourse to the Catheter, as moderate repeated attempts may
succeed
