[ID:3997] From: Dr William Cullen (Professor Cullen) / To: Mr James Ewart / Regarding: Mr (Patient), Mr (Patient) / 9 February 1777 / (Outgoing)

Reply, to 'Ewart surgeon in Dumfries C. a Hysteric man & the Jamaica man'. Cullen believes that one patient is hysteric, while the man from Jamaica is in danger of phthisis. He refers to a 'Bark Infusion as in Page 307. for Drysdale' for the hysteria case: this is probably Letter ID 3948, which includes a Bark Infusion recipe.

Ewart Surgeon in Dumfries C. a Hysteric man, & the
Jamaican man. See the 2d page back.

His disease altho in a male, truly Hysteria, may be obstinate
but I hope may be cured & the remedy I would chiefly depend on
is the Pil cerulææ of the November edition of the Edinburgh Pharmacopoeia Let him have a dose every
night & morning, which may at first be one Pill & if this affect
his stomach or give any squeamishness it is enough but if not,
increases it to 3 or 4 pills till it have some effect upon the
Stomach
. Wash down every dose with ℥ii of the Bark infusion
ordered below. Along with these keep belly regular & nothing
more proper than the fœtid pills you have used, but if they
do not answer add some Aloes to the fœtid Gums.

Need not be reduced to a vegetable diet but should deal
much in milk and farinacea & ↑be↑ sparing of animal food,
& should take no fermented or spirituous liquors. Let
him take fresh air & gentle exercise but riding or ↑going in↑ a carr¬
iage are better than walking, for he must avoid bodily
fatigue
. Avoid violent & especially sudden emotions.

I have little to add about the Jamaica Gentleman in the
way of Medicine ---- He is in great danger of Phthisis, &
must take to a milk & vegetable diet -- and as soon
as the season will allow, to get on horseback & ride a great deal.
Bleeding & blistering may be occasionally necessary, but he should
depend on diet & riding & if convenient a voyage, but
not to a warm climate in the Summer.

For the Hysteric Gent.

Take Peruvian Bark &cc. Bark infusion as in Page 307. for Drysdale - A small cupfull after every dose of the Pills
