For Mr Wm Cunninghame.
Gouty habit - may prevent the trouble & effects
1. Carefully gaurd against cold every precaution.
2. As much exercise as possible. Riding on horse back best.
Walking in moderation proper also. As a man of business
must be confined to the house. Therefore a larger chamber
& never sit long writing but dictate to an Amanuensis
At Dinner some solid meat, filling up with broth
pudding & vegetables, but sparingly of the latter - Avoid the
cold & flatulent - Supper very light. if any some milk
meat. No Indian Tea or Coffee. if you choose Tea - Cocoa

is the best. An Egg at breakfast allowable. -
Ordinary drink water. No matt liquor - After
dinner a few glasses of Punch or Wine. but the Punch
without souring & the wine must be strong ---
If your pain should still come by a dose of the
Tincture ordered below. You may try it for seven or eight
nights - But if they still continue, you must try a dose
of Dover Powder cum regimine ad Sudorem 1
Avoid costiveness.
Take four ounces of a Volatile Elixir of Guaiac. Label: Diaphoretic fifty drops of the Tincture on a bit of sugar. This to be dissolved in a little warm Negus H.P.
Notes:
1: 'To control the sweating'.
