For Mr Campbell

Upon considering the representation put into
my hands I do not find it so clear & full as I could
wish & think it necessary that a Surgeon should be
employed to give a more exact & full account. Particularly
let the Surgeon say whether or not there is or has been
any suspicion of either Hernia or Hydrocele.

In the mean time I shall give my opinion of what
seems to be most proper. the first thing to be done
is to apply a proper bandage or Suspensory. That
may absolutely prevent the Testicle from feeling their own
weight. For this purpose the most proper is a bag
filled with wool which may be drawn tight upon the
testicles without either hurting them or the neighbouring parts.

If this Suspensory is properly adapted & applied
it will allow him to get out of bed & sit by the fire
some part of the day but if he shall still find that in this
situation the swelling increases {illeg} towards the Evening he must
sit up less & lie more upon his bed.

Whatever is the case it will contribute to prevent
Inflammation & to discuss the swelling to apply the liquor
ordered below 2 or 3 times a day. The cold is to be put
of the liquor by setting the bottle for a little time in
a bason or bowl of warm water. It is proper the Cold
should be put off it but not necessary that it should be
warmed. In this middle condition a 4 fold linnen
cloth or Compress should be dipt in the liquor & applied
to the testicles & allowed to remain till it dries this is
to be done as he lies abed 3 or 4 times a day & after

[Page 2]

if the Suspensory is to be again applied & kept on
night & day.

It is possible that the Physic & Mercury [internally?]
at first have been of service, but I cannot think
it can be now proper or safe but it is very necessary
that his belly should be kept regular & all costiveness
prevented by a gentle Laxative employed when occasion
may require. Fl. or Sulph. or Cr. of Tart. or
either of these with the lenitive Electuary are amongst the
most proper.

It is very necessary in this ailment to keep to a
low & spare diet & particularly to abstain from all
kinds of strong drink & more especially Spirits.

These are the advices I can offer at present
but more full & exact observation comes to my
hand I shall endeavour with great attention & punctuality
to advise further as well as I can.

For Mr Campbell.

Take one pint of Rose Water, two drachms of Sugar of Lead, and one ounce of Vinegar distillate. Dissolve and strain through paper. Label: Discutient
