Dr Gilchrist --
My dear Dr.

Amidst uncommon hurry I write you
shortly rather than not write at all. I go tomorrow sixty
miles to the westward so that I could not write you again for
several days to come. For the Lady you mention in the first
part of your letter I have nothing to say but applaud your
management in every respect and even to the giving the egg shell
which you must ↑not↑ despise too much. I have been told or have read
and I can't positively say which that Van Doeveren Professor
of practice at Leiden cures the fluor albus by large doses of
Crabs Eyes. I have resolved to try it but have as yet forgot to do it.
the wonders performed by Bearberry I impute very much to its
absorbing acids. You may think on those things till we shall
have more time to discuss them.

With respect to Mr Gordon of Halleaths I doubt much if
any remedy can be proposed with any probability but you are
right in thinking that both he and Mrs Gordon should be kept
from absolute despair. What may be done to this purpose I
have not time just now to think of but I can readily agree
with you

[Page 2]

that at the proper season some excursion may be proposed and
cold ↑bathing↑ may certainly be tried and if done by degrees it may be
tried with great safety but on the whole of the subject of Mr
Gordon there is enough of time to deliberate. Excuse my
present haste and believe me still most sincerely ––––
